This is a sequel to Odd Thomas. If you have not read the original yet, I strongly suggest it. It is not necessary to read Odd Thomas first, but you will get the background for Odd. If you are looking for everything that was in the first book to be explained, you will be let down. This is a continuation of the story and doesn’t really go into much of what was covered in the first one. In this story, one of Odd’s friends turns up missing. Odd must use his ‘special powers’ to locate and try to rescue him. This brings him to a formidable enemy who may have taken Odd’s friend, but is truly after Odd. I fell in love with Odd in the first book and that love was not diminished in the second one. This novel has the same mix of humor and bittersweet despair that leaves you laughing and crying throughout the book. Don’t wait for paperback with this one, et it in hardback- you won’t be let down.
This is Koontz’s newest thriller and it is great! The action is along the same lines of Velocity. It’s very fast moving and pops constantly. There are some very exciting twists to this novel, that I, for one, did not see coming! The story starts with Mitch, a married man who owns a small landscaping company, he receives a call explaining that his wife, Holly, has been kidnapped. She will be returned for two million dollars. The catch? Mitch is a small time landscaper and has nowhere near that amount of money. The kidnappers feel that if Mitch loves his wife enough, he will find a way. The story takes off as Mitch has to scramble to try to get the money. We also follow Holly as she must deal with her captors and do whatever she can to live. The story is so twisty that you never know who to trust!
This is the third installment of the Odd Thomas series. If you haven’t read the first two in the series I suggest you do before reading this one, I also suggest you stop reading this review so you don’t have to worry about spoilers. When last we left Odd he had decided to go to live in a monastery for awhile to clear his head and get some perspective. He gets that and a lot more in this book. We get to meet many new characters and see some of the old ones as well. And yes Koontz fans, there is a dog in this one. Where Odd goes, mystery follows. A baffling disappearance occurs within the monastery and the cops are of no help. Looks like it’s Odd to the rescue! The problem is that this is not the first time trouble has hit this monastery and suddenly bodachs are popping up as well! Just a normal day in the life of Odd. I’ve heard from several people that they didn’t care for Forever Odd as much as Odd Thomas, this book makes up for it! While there is not the full emotion from Odd Thomas in this one, it is still very exciting and at times heart-wrenching. This book is very poetic as the first one was as well and deals a lot with the battle between religion and science. Get out your Quantum Physics hat before reading this one! So, while I can’t rate it as high as Odd Thomas, it’s a definite great read and a bit closer to the first one in likeability and story.
